Vijayadashami better known as Dussehra is celebrated in the month of September or October as a symbol of Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. Dussehra- is a Sanskrit word which means- remover of ten heads of Ravan- a term used for Lord Rama. This Hindu festival carries the notion of win of good over evil among all.
Ramayana- the Hindu epic, tells the story of Lord Rama killing Ravana who had abducted Ram’s wife Seeta to his kingdom Lanka. Ram killed ten headed Ravana on this day and hence marked his glorious victory. Puranas also opined that on this day Goddess Durga defeated and killed demon Mahishasura. Therefore, the festival observes double celebrations.
The festival gets huge celebrations from all parts of the country. Ramlila- the enactment of Lord Rama’s lifeis held during the nine days of Navratri which is followed by Dussehra on tenth day. Therefore it comes like a grand event after the Navratri.
On the Dussehra night, the effigies of Ravana are set to fire in almost all the cities and towns. On this day people pledge to burn the evil within them, and thus follow the path of truth and goodness, who despite all his strength, was destroyed for his evil ways.
