Diwali or Deepavali which translates to “Row of Lamps” is a festival of lamps or candles and is probably the most popular Hindu festival in India. It is celebrated in the month of October or November, in all parts of the country. Diwali is an official holiday for ten countries including India which tells how widely it is celebrated.
Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Laxman after a fourteen years long exile and a remarkable victory over Ravana, to the capital of his kingdom – Ayodhya. In the joy of his return, people illuminated candles and Diyas(small clay lamps). The festival is dedicated as a remembrance of those celebrations.
Diwali is celebrated with joy and happiness in all parts of the country. The firecrackers are set off during the Diwali night and the Diyas and candles are illuminated across the houses. People visit their relatives and exchange gifts and sweets. On the Diwali night, they worship Lakshmi who is the goddess of wealth. The doors are generally kept opened on Diwali night in goddess Lakshmi’s respect. The festival is like a grand event which brings this big nation together.
